The Master of Education, Specialty Studies K-12 Specialization, is designed as a 33 hour intensive program for students who already hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution and teacher certification. Successful completion of the program will prepare candidates to complete a master’s degree in a K-12 area of expertise and/or certification in the current licensure area.
Concentrations in the Specialty Studies include:
• Academically and Intellectually Gifted (AIG)
• Physical Education and Health (PEH)
• Spanish (SPN)
• English as a Second Language (ESL)

Admission Requirements
1. Bachelor’s degree, earned from a regionally accredited institution, before graduate study begins.
2. Official copies of transcripts of college work (graduate and undergraduate). An undergraduate grade average of “B” (GPA = 3.0) or better is recommended.
3. Three recommendations by individuals in relevant professional fields.
4. A letter of interest or intent as outlined by each concentration area.
Degree Requirements (33 Credit Hours)
Students will complete coursework according to the concentration as listed below. Academically and Intellectually Gifted (AIG) Concentration (33 credit hours)
Exit Requirement
Benchmark portfolio, including a field based gifted program review founded on program objectives and state/national standards for Teacher Preparation in Gifted and Talented Education. PE/Health (PEH) Concentration (33 credit hours)
Exit Requirement
Teaching portfolio, including an action research project based on program objectives and state/national standards for PEH. Spanish (SPN) Concentration (33 credit hours)
Exit Requirement
Teaching portfolio based on SPN objectives and state/ national standards for World Language teachers. English as a Second Language (ESL) Concentration (33 credit hours)
Exit Requirement
Teaching portfolio, EDN 517 and an action research project. |
