Dear Students,
Welcome to the University of North Carolina Wilmington. We are especially pleased that you have chosen to pursue your graduate studies here.
Whether you are the recent recipient of a bachelor’s degree, here or elsewhere, an employee seeking to revitalize a career, or someone fulfilling a long-held dream of attaining a graduate degree, the UNCW faculty and staff stand ready to help you, to inspire you, and to show you the many opportunities available here. I am confident that you will find this to be a challenging, exciting and rewarding experience.
Our graduate programs in the arts, business, education, humanities, health and human services, and the natural, social, and mathematical sciences are designed to provide a sound disciplinary foundation for the vocation or avocation of your choice and the opportunity to explore areas of particular interest to you.
Of course we want you to develop deep and detailed knowledge of your particular field of study. However, we also want you to develop a wide-ranging curiosity which will be the foundation for life-long learning. In today’s global environment, our challenge as educators is to stimulate you as students to do your best possible work, to use your minds to bridge cultural, economic, and intellectual differences in order to create a safer, a more educated, and a more tolerant society.
Even in today’s economy, opportunities await those with critical thinking skills, a mature work ethic, and a passion for their chosen field.
You have chosen us, and we have chosen you.
Let’s work together to make your graduate education the very best it can be.
Sincerely,
Denise A. Battles

Dear Students,
On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I proudly welcome you to the University of North Carolina Wilmington. UNCW is a diverse and vibrant place, and you will soon discover that a world of learning experiences awaits you.
This is a critical time in your path of higher education. The decisions you make about which courses to pursue will help you map out your future, both here at UNCW and beyond. I implore you to weigh your options carefully, with one question looming above all others: Which of these courses will help you fulfill your dreams academically, professionally, and culturally? You may be surprised at the answers, but let them lead you toward bold, confident decisions that will put you on the path to success.
UNCW is known for the quality of its students, faculty and staff. Our university is recognized as one of the five best public master’s universities in the South, according to the 2013 U.S. News & World Report. In fact, UNCW is among a select group of universities that has been ranked in the top 10 for the past 15 years. But beyond our esteemed programs and public accolades, we offer something else: the chance for you to decide who it is you will be, on campus and in the world. Make your course selections accordingly, follow your heart while using your head, and you can’t go wrong.
While you are a student at UNCW, I encourage you to embrace our values and to commit to working hard and having fun; they serve very different but equally important purposes, so don’t lose sight of either goal. I wish you health, happiness and success in all of your endeavors.
Sincerely yours,
Linda A. Pearce
Chair of Board of Trustees
