Teaching English as a Second Language, Post-Baccalaureate Certificate

This program is designed for applicants who hold a bachelor’s degree and are interested in pursuing a certificate in education. This certificate would not culminate in recommendation for North Carolina teacher licensure unless the applicant is currently teaching in a North Carolina school and completes the state-required internship as an additional requirement.
Program Objective
- To provide a baseline level of preparation for applicants wishing to learn how to work English language learners within the United States or abroad.
Student Learning Outcomes
- Students will demonstrate knowledge of the North Carolina laws and regulations regarding English learners by successfully completing the requirements of TSL 511 and TSL 517
- Students will demonstrate an ability to design and implement appropriate instruction for English learners by successfully completing the requirements of TSL 517, TSL 537, TSL 516 and TSL 518
- Students will demonstrate knowledge of the attributes and characteristics of the English language by successfully completing the requirements of TSL 537 and TSL 519
- Students will explain the relationship between culture, language and learning by successfully completing the requirements of TSL 511, TSL 517 and TSL 537

Admission Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university completed before graduate study begins.
- Official copies of transcripts of all college, university or community college work (undergraduate and graduate). Undergraduate GPA of 3. 0 or better is recommended for application to UNCW. The state of North Carolina Department of Public Instruction requires that applicants have an undergraduate GPA of 2.7 to receive a teaching license.
- Three letters of recommendation.
ESL Core
Students must complete all courses.
Additional Information
The Teaching English as a Second Language Post-Baccalaureate Certificate is a program offered by UNCW and is designed for applicants that are not immediately seeking K12 license in ESL. It is not a licensure pathway. Applicants who currently hold an ESL teaching position with a temporary Clinical Residency license should apply to the UNCW Clinical Residency program, which is a licensure pathway program.
