FIN 443  -  Blockchain in Finance


The purpose of this course is to provide a sound working knowledge of cryptocurrency, blockchain and their derivatives. This course is designed for students wishing to explore blockchain technology’s potential use—by entrepreneurs, investors and commercial concerns adapting to a changing world of money and finance.
Starting with the basics of Bitcoin, students will gain an understanding of the fundamentals of blockchain technology, distributed ledgers and smart ledgers. The class will examine current and potential blockchain applications in the financial, commercial and even military sectors. This will include reviews of potential use cases for payment systems, central banking, venture capital, secondary market trading, trade finance, commercial banking, post trade possessing and digital ID as well as applications in data management.
This course will examine not only the markets but also the regulatory landscape for cryptocurrencies, initial coin offerings, other tokens and crypto derivatives. By examining competing influences and the analytical tools that are used for tracking, pricing and risk management.
Some parts of the course will be fairly technical while others will be largely conceptual. Each session will be organized around one or two key topics. In addition, class notes, current articles and handouts will be used to supplement and clarify issues.

Credit Hours: 3

Prerequisite Courses: FIN 335 .
Additional Restrictions/Requirements: Prerequisites and admission to Cameron School of Business.
