The College of Humanities, Social Sciences, and the Arts (CHSSA) offers a variety of programs in the liberal arts leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts in creative writing, Bachelor of Music, Master of Arts, Master of Fine Arts in creative writing and filmmaking, and Master of Public Administration. CHSSA also offers combined bachelor’s/master’s degree programs in Spanish and English, and a degree in interdisciplinary studies. To implement these programs,CHSSA provides instruction, research, and creative opportunities in the humanities, social sciences, and fine arts. The 15 academic departments in CHSSA provide courses of study in their areas, in addition to interdepartmental programs in Africana studies; Asian studies; campaign management, classical studies; European studies; forensic science; journalism; Latin American studies; medical humanities; Middle East and Islamic studies; Native American studies; pre-law, political entrepreneurship and leadership, and women and gender studies. CHSSA houses the Gender Studies and Research Center, a vibrant and interdisciplinary community of students, scholars, and partners committed to social justice and a deeper understanding of gender issues. Undergraduate certificates for professional writing and publishing, as well as post-baccalaureate certificates in conflict management and resolution, emergency and disaster management, forensic science, science and medical writing, women’s, gender, and sexuality studies, Hispanic studies, and a post-master’s certificate in liberal studies, are also offered.
CHSSA is a transformative academic environment that values discovery, innovation, collaboration and creativity. Double majors, minors, experiences abroad and independent study are all encouraged. Students are encouraged to engage with their passions,explore their curiosities and cultivate their creativity. CHSSA offers limitless opportunities to engage in collaborative and interdisciplinary research and service and make a positive societal impact. Experiential learning empowers CHSSA students to make a difference in the community and enhance the world, preparing them for a wide range of careers.

Admission to the College of Humanities, Social Sciences, and the Arts
Center for Academic Advising students wishing to declare a major within the College of Humanities, Social Sciences, and the Arts are eligible to do so after earning between 24 and 45 credits at UNCW. Students should review the requirements of the major to determine if any specific requirements need to be completed before declaring. Students can then use the Declare Major Administration tool found on Seaport to declare the new major. The college encourages double majors and minors across all Colleges and within CHSSA.
