Integrated STEM with Teaching Licensure Minor

The Watson College of Education and the College of Science and Engineering, offer an interdisciplinary minor in Integrated Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (iSTEM) with Teaching Licensure designed to enable students earning a B.S. degree in the following STEM disciplines: biology, chemistry, computer science, environmental studies, mathematics, and physics, earn a teaching licensure.

Requirements of an Integrated STEM with Teaching Licensure Minor

The program consists of a selection of courses designed as Integrated STEM, coupled with pedagogy courses that also stress STEM Integration. Since students earning a B.S. in the specified disciplines will complete the Integrated STEM courses as part of their major, the minor provides a pathway for students enrolled in the program to earn their teachng licensure while completing only 29 additional hours of pedagogy courses. For purposes of this program, a course designated as an Integrated STEM course must include one of the following learning outcomes:

Demonstrate knowledge of connections among two or more STEM disciplines; and
Apply STEM problem solving methodologies, such as the scientific method, the engineering design process, or modeling, to real world problems.

iSTEM Courses (25-30 hours total completed as part of the student’s major)

UNI 101 iSTEM section (3 hours)

Lower-level iSTEM courses (13-16 hours). Complete iSTEM designated sections of four of the following courses:

*MAT 161 , MAT 162 , MAE 206, *EVS 205 , *BIO 201 , *EVS 195 and EVSL 195 , *GLY 101 , *CHM 101 , *CHML 101 *CSC 112 , *STT 215 , *PHY 201 . Note: * indicates University Studies courses.

Upper-level iSTEM courses (6-8 hours). Complete iSTEM designated sections of two of the following courses:MAT 361 , CHM 415 , BIO 366 and BIOL 366 , BIO 335 and BIO 366 , CSC 340 , MAT 335 , CHM 417 , EVS 360 , EVS 445 , PHY 311 , PHY 400 .

iSTEM Capstone (3 hours). Complete a 3-hour discipline specific iSTEM capstone in one of the following courses: BIO 495 (1-3) and BIOL 495 (1), CHM 495 (1), CSC 495 (1), EVS 495 (1), MAT 495 (3), PHY 497 (1)

Secondary Teaching Licensure - Education Courses (29 hours)

The following courses will be taken along with lower-level iSTEM courses:
SEC 206 - Inquiry-Based Learning Credit Hours: 3 (iSTEM)
SEC 225 - iSTEM - Early Field Experience Credit Hours: 1 (Criminal background check is required)
SEC 305 - Diverse Learners in Secondary Schools Credit Hours: 3 (iSTEM)
SEC 325 - iSTEM - Student Teaching I Credit Hours: 1
Note: Students must sucessfully complete lower-level iSTEM courses with a GPA at or above 2.5 and complete education courses including required field based experience I with a cumulative GPA at or above 2.70. Eligible students must apply to the Integrated STEM Licensure program upon completion of the lower-level iSTEM courses and education courses, and be admitted to the secondary teachng licensure program.
The following courses will be taken along with upper-level iSTEM courses:
SEC 407 - iSTEM - Project Based Instruction and Assessment Credit Hours: 3
SEC 425 - iSTEM - Student Teaching II Credit Hours: 3
Choose from one of the following courses:
EDN 442 - Introduction to Gifted Education Credit Hours: 3 or
SEC 410 - ESL Topics for Secondary Teachers Credit Hours: 3 or
SED 354 - Curriculum and Methods of Instruction for Secondary Transition Credit Hours: 3
Note: Students must sucessfully complete Praxis II exams and apply for internship teaching.
The following courses will be taken along with the iSTEM Capstone course:
SEC 432 - iSTEM - Student Teaching III Credit Hours: 9
SEC 435 - iSTEM - Education E-Portfolio and Reflective Seminar Credit Hours: 3
Note: Successful completion of reflective seminar including acceptable submission of e-portfolio including reflection on inquiry-based and project-based action research results, and secondary student learning evaluatons results; summary of hours; focused observation forms, and submission of NC Folio.
