The College of Humanities, Social Sciences, and the Arts offers a variety of programs in the liberal arts leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts in creative writing, Bachelor of Music, Master of Arts, Master of Fine Arts in creative writing and filmmaking, and Master of Public Administration. The college also offers combined bachelor’s/master’s degree programs in Spanish and English. To implement these programs, the college provides instruction, research, and creative opportunities in the humanities, social sciences, and fine arts. The 15 academic departments in the college provide courses of study in each of these areas, in addition to interdepartmental programs in Africana studies; American studies; Asian studies; classical studies; European studies; forensic science; journalism; Latin American studies; medical humanities; Middle East and Islamic studies; Native American studies; and women and gender studies. The college houses the Gender Studies and Research Center, an interdisciplinary and intersectional community of students, scholars, and advocates committed to social justice and equity. Undergraduate certificates for professional writing and publishing, as well as post-baccalaureate certificates in conflict management and resolution, emergency and disaster management, forensic science, science and medical writing, women’s, gender, and sexuality studies, Hispanic studies, and a post-master’s certificate in liberal studies, are also offered.
The College of Humanities, Social Sciences, and the Arts is a vibrant academic environment that values discovery, innovation, and creativity. Double majors, minors, experiences abroad and independent study are all encouraged. Students are encouraged to engage with their passions, their curiosities and their creativity. CHSSA offers limitless opportunities to engage in collaborative and interdisciplinary research and service and make a positive societal impact. Experiential learning empowers CHSSA students to make a difference in the community and enhance the world, preparing them for a wide range of careers.
