Musical Theatre Minor

The interdisciplinary minor in Musical Theatre is offered to students in all majors seeking to enhance their degree with an added focus in the discipline of musical theatre. All students take core coursework in applied voice, dance and movement, scene study and production workshops, and musical theatre history and literature; non-theatre majors take foundational acting courses and non-music majors take foundational courses in musicianship and class voice. Requirements for a Minor in Musical Theatre

Applied Voice Lessons (3 credits)

Required for all students:

Three credit hour of applied voice lessons (either MUS 195 or MUS 196 )
MUS 195 - Lower Level Applied Music, Private Lessons Credit Hours: 1
MUS 196 - Lower Level Applied Music, Private Lessons Credit Hours: 1

Performance Techniques and Workshops (3 credits)

Required for all students:

MUS 334 - Musical Theatre Performance Techniques Credit Hours: 1
Two credit hours of Musical Theatre Workshop:
MUS 335 - Musical Theatre Workshop Credit Hours: 1

History and Literature (3 credits)

Required for all students:

MUS 341 - American Musical Theatre Credit Hours: 3

Dance (6 credits)

Required for all students:

THR 237 - Musical Theatre Dance Credit Hours: 3
And choose one of the following:
THR 134 - Ballet I Credit Hours: 3
THR 135 - Modern Dance I Credit Hours: 3
THR 136 - Movement Exploration Credit Hours: 3

Non-Theatre Majors: Acting (6 credits)

Required for non-theatre majors:

THR 231 - Craft of Acting I - Self-discovery and Truth - Fundamental Techniques of Acting Credit Hours: 3
THR 332 - Craft of Acting II - Listening and Responding in the Moment Credit Hours: 3

Non-Music Majors: Musicianship and Class Voice (3 credits)

Required for non-music majors:

MUS 145 - Musicianship for Musical Theatre Credit Hours: 2
Non-music majors may pass out of MUS 145 by demonstrating equivalent proficiency on the Department of Music’s music theory placement exam. If MUS 145 is waived, take at least 2 credit hours of electives in music or dance.
MUS 146 - Class Voice I Credit Hours: 1
MUS 146 prepares the non-music major for private lessons in applied voice. Non-music majors who successfully audition into MUS 195 or MUS 196 upon entry to the Musical Theatre minor may have MUS 146 waived. If MUS 146 is waived, take 1 additional credit hour of MUS 195 or MUS 196 beyond the required 3 credit hours, for a total of 4 credit hours of private applied voice lessons.
