Musical Theatre Minor

The interdisciplinary minor in Musical Theatre is offered to students in all majors seeking to enhance their degree with an added focus in the discipline of musical theatre. All students take core coursework in applied voice, dance and movement, scene study and production workshops, and musical theatre history and literature; non-theatre majors take foundational acting courses and non-music majors take foundational courses in musicianship and class voice. For additional information, students should contact the coordinator in the Department of Music.

Requirements for a Minor in Musical Theatre
Applied Voice Lessons (3 credits)
Required for all students:
Performance Techniques and Workshops (3 credits)
Required for all students:
History and Literature (3 credits)
Required for all students:
Dance (6 credits)
Required for all students:
Non-Theatre Majors: Acting (6 credits)
Required for non-theatre majors:
Non-Music Majors: Musicianship and Class Voice (3 credits)
Required for non-music majors:
- MUS 145 - Musicianship for Musical Theatre Credit Hours: 2
Non-music majors may pass out of MUS 145 by demonstrating equivalent proficiency on the Department of Music’s music theory placement exam. If MUS 145 is waived, take at least 2 credit hours of electives in music or dance. - MUS 146 - Class Voice I Credit Hours: 1
MUS 146 prepares the non-music major for private lessons in applied voice. Non-music majors who successfully audition into MUS 195 or MUS 196 upon entry to the Musical Theatre minor may have MUS 146 waived. If MUS 146 is waived, take 1 additional credit hour of MUS 195 or MUS 196 beyond the required 3 credit hours, for a total of 4 credit hours of private applied voice lessons.
