Designed for the 21st-century musician, the Bachelor of Arts offers innovative areas of study in classical performance, jazz, music technology and entrepreneurship, and general music. The Bachelor of Arts degree is a foundation for a wide range of career options, including performance, private studio teacher, composition, music technology and recording, concert management and promotion, or graduate study in music and/or other academic areas.

Computer Requirement:
To satisfy the computer requirement for the B.A. degree in Music and the B.M. in Music Education a student must successfully complete MUS 110 .
Oral Communication Requirement:
To satisfy the oral communication requirement for the B.A. in Music and the B.M. in Music Education a student must successfully complete MUS 285 or MUS 496 .
Applied Learning Requirement:
To satisfy the applied learning requirement for the B.A. degree in Music and the B.M. degree in Music Education a student must successfully complete either EDN 409 or MUS 493 or MUS 496 or MUS 498 .
Core Requirements Common to all Music Curricula (30 credit hours):
Ensemble Requirement (8 credit hours):
BA students are required to be in at least one large music ensemble appropriate to the student’s option (MUS 180 , MUS 183 , MUS 184 , MUS 185 , MUS 186 , MUS 187 ) during each semester they are in residence (8 credit hours). Keyboard, guitar, harp, and music technology students may substitute up to 4 hours from MUS 130 , MUS 182 . Only one large ensemble per semester may be credited toward the degree.
Additional Information:
BA students will also be required to demonstrate upper-level proficiency in the applied area by passing an upper-level jury.
All music majors must pass the piano proficiency examination and the listening repertory examinations, as described in the latest edition of the Department of Music Student Handbook. All students are expected to make regular progress toward completion of those requirements. Piano majors may substitute a 1 credit of applied lessons in a secondary area in lieu of MUS 242 .
BA students will also be required to complete 4 semesters of applied music (MUS 196 ) in the principal area and demonstrate upper level proficiency in the applied area (4 credit hours).
* Students are required to enroll in no fewer than 22 hours of electives outside of music.
In addition, no credit toward music major requirements will be granted for MUS 105 , MUS 106 , and/or MUS 115 .
BA Degree Options (19-23 credit hours)
Students may select from the following areas
General Music Option
14 elective MUS credits, at least 3 of which must be 300- or 400-level (may include MUS 396 upper-level applied lessons, MUS 393 Junior Recital and/or MUS 493 Senior Recital.
Bachelor of Arts in Music: 57-61 credit hours
- Music Core Requirements: 30 credit hours
- Ensemble Requirement: 8 credit hours
- Option: 19-23 credit hours
A minimum final grade of “C-” is required in each music course and a cumulative grade point average of 2.00 or better is required for graduation.
