Teaching English as Second Language Minor

The Watson College of Education offers a minor in teaching English as a second language. The minor provides students with knowledge of second language acquisition, cultural differences, linguistics, and instructional strategies for meeting the education needs of students for whom English is a second language. The minor leads to add-on teacher licensure in English as a second language for individuals who have earned initial NC teacher licensure. Students should contact the coordinator in the Watson College of Education for additional information.

Program Objectives
- Teacher candidates have knowledge and understanding of English as a language.
- Teacher candidates understand the impact of linguistic and cultural differences on learning.
- Teacher candidates have knowledge of the instructional cycle, including the design, implementation, and assessment of instruction for multilingual learners.
- Teacher candidates have knowledge of the policies and regulations related to teaching English learners.
