Evolutionary Studies Minor

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Undergraduate Programs A-Z

The interdisciplinary minor in Evolutionary Studies provides students with an understanding of the integrated study of evolution across disciplines. This minor will allow students to study the evolution of life from the perspective of different scientific disciplines, as well as to think about its significance in relation to human life and culture, including our philosophical, religious, historical, artistic and literary modes of reflection. This approach will stimulate students’ abilities to recognize multiple viewpoints concerning evolution and to consider how and to what extent these perspectives complement or compete with one another. A minimum of 18 hours is required to complete the minor.

This minor will be especially relevant for students who want to integrate natural sciences, behavioral sciences and humanities approaches in the study of evolution; for those aspiring to teach science courses in high school; and for those desiring to learn more about contemporary evolutionary theory cross disciplines. Students from a diversity of majors will demonstrate a foundational knowledge of the basic principles of evolutionary theory and apply them to more than one discipline.
