Admission to Degree Programs
New and re enrolling freshmen, unclassified and special admission students, and other students who have not yet been accepted into a degree program are assigned to the University College for academic support. Each of these students is assigned a University College advisor who assists the student in selecting courses to fulfill University Studies requirements, maintaining the required academic standards, and choosing a major. All University College advisors emphasize the importance of undertaking a rigorous academic load consisting of 15-16 credit hours each semester in order to complete all requirements for graduation within four years and can provide model four-year graduation plans for all majors offered by the university.
Admission to the College of Humanities, Social Sciences, and the Arts
University College students wishing to declare a major within the College of Arts and Sciences are eligible to do so after earning between 24 and 45 credits at UNCW. Students should review the requirements of the major to determine if any specific requirements need to be completed before declaring. Students can then use the Declare Major Administration tool found on Seaport to declare the new major.
Admission to UNCW and the Department of Music
Admission to UNCW and the Department of Music consists of a dual admission process. While application to the university is through the Office of Admissions, formal admission to the Department of Music and its degree programs must be made through an audition admission process. Admission to the College of Science and Engineering
University College students wishing to declare a major within the College of Science and Engineering are eligible to do so after earning between 24 and 45 credits at UNCW. Students should review the requirements of the major to determine if any specific requirements need to be completed before declaring. Students can then use the Declare Major Administration tool found on Seaport to declare the new major.
Admission to the Professional Colleges, Schools, and Programs
University College students wishing to declare a major within a professional program will request to have their records transferred to the appropriate school after earning 24 credits at UNCW but before or during the semester that they complete 45 semester hours of credit. These students will then be assigned to that school or college for pre-professional advising.
Students seeking admission to the Watson College of Education normally submit their applications to the appropriate school immediately upon completion of the third semester of study, provided the minimal requirements as stated in the university catalogue have been met at the time of application.
Students seeking admission to the Watson College of Education must submit an online application to the Office of the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Program Support, and Student Success. Applications should be submitted as soon as minimal requirements are met to allow students to proceed in upper level coursework. Students seeking a B.S. in Business Administration or a B.A. in Economics are initially declared into a Pre-Major and must apply for admission to the Cameron School of Business at the direction of their assigned Academic Advisor. Students seeking admission to the B.S. in Nursing program (Pre-licensure option or RN-BS option) within the School of Nursing must submit applications to the Office of Student Success in the College of Health and Human Services. Students seeking admission to the Clinical Research Program within the School of Nursing must submit applications to the Office of Student Success in the College of Health and Human Services.
