Oral Communication Requirement:

To satisfy the oral communication requirement for the B.A. or B.S. degree in Biology or the B.S. degree in Marine Biology a student must successfully complete BIO 495 .

Applied Learning Requirement:

To satisfy the applied learning requirement for the B.A. or B.S. degree in Biology or the B.S. degree in Marine Biology a student must successfully complete one of the following: honors in any science department (BIO 499 , CHM 499 , EVS 499 , GLY 499 , MAT 499 , PSY 499 , PHY 499 ); directed individual study involving hands-on experience in any science department (BIO 291 , BIO 491 , BIO 495 , CHM 491 , EVS 491 , GLY 491 , MAT 491 , PSY 491 , PHY 491 ); BIO 498 , BIO 493 ; formal student teaching experience taken for UNCW credit (e.g. EDNL 406 , EDN 409 , EDN 411 ).

Additional Information:

The department strongly recommends that two out of BIO 366 ; BIO 335 ; BIO 340  or BIO 345  or BIO 240  be completed before taking other BIO courses at the 300 or 400 level. A “C” (2.00) or better average is required for BIO courses above 299.

Biology Option (19 credit hours):

Must complete general requirements for B.S. Degree in Biology. Additionally, must take a minimum of 19 hours chosen from BIO courses numbered above 299. No more than 10 hours from BIO 480 , BIO 491 , BIO 493 , BIO 498 , and BIO 499  can be counted towards the elective 19 hours. This program is designed to meet the needs of biology majors to immediately begin a career in biology or who may wish to pursue further education in graduate school in biology or professional schools in the health sciences.

Pre-Health Option

This program is designed to meet the needs of biology majors who may wish to pursue further education in medical school or professional schools in the health sciences. The sequence of courses conforms to entrance requirements prescribed in publications of the Association of American Medical Colleges, the American Association of Dental Schools, and the Council on Optometric Education of the American Optometric Association.

Working closely with an advisor, students may select elective courses tailored to individual needs (for example; Pre-health Professional: BIO 315 , BIO 316 , BIO 320 , BIO 325 , BIO 370 , BIO 459 , BIO 465 ). Must complete general requirements for B.S. Degree in Biology Pre-Health Option. Additionally, must take a minimum of 13 hours chosen from BIO courses numbered above 299. No more than 10 hours from BIO 480 , BIO 491 , BIO 493 , BIO 498 , and BIO 499  can be counted towards the elective 13 hours. Additionally, must take 6 hours from the B.S. Degree in Biology Pre-Health Option Social Science/Humanities Electives.

Pre-Veterinary Medicine Option

This program is designed to meet the needs of biology majors who may wish to pursue further education in the veterinary health sciences. The sequences of courses conform to entrance requirements prescribed in publications of most veterinary professional programs. However, students should check each school’s pre-requisites, as they can vary from school to school.

Must complete general requirements for B.S. Degree in Biology Pre-Veterinary Medicine Option. Additionally, must take a minimum of 12 hours chosen from BIO courses numbered above 299. No more than 10 hours from BIO 480 , BIO 491 , BIO 493 , BIO 498 , and BIO 499  can be counted towards the 12 elective hours. Additionally, a minimum of 6 hours chosen in any combination of Humanities and/or Social Sciences. Humanities courses include, but are not limited to, history, foreign language, literature (English, American, etc.), music, art, and theater. Social Science courses include, but are not limited to, anthropology, philosophy, political science, psychology, and sociology.

Terrestrial and Freshwater Conservation Option:

Must complete general requirements for B.S. Degree in Biology, and BIO 466.

The B.S. Biology Terrestrial and Freshwater Conservation option provides a B.S. Biology degree plan that is designed for students primarily interested in the biological aspects of conservation science (e.g. community ecology, population biology, biogeography, conservation genetics and assessment of threatened or endangered species and habitats).

Students planning to attend graduate school are also encouraged to take CHM 235 ; MAT 152  or MAT 162 ; CSC 112 , CSC 121 . Students interested in health professional schools should contact Dr. Art Frampton.
