Coaching and Mentoring, Post-Baccalaureate Certificate

The Coaching and Mentoring Certificate is designed to enhance the leadership qualities and skills of professionals who desire to effectively mentor and coach individuals in various settings. Grounded in the latest research in mentoring and coaching, the program provides graduate students (from any discipline) the opportunity to obtain the skills and knowledge necessary to be effective mentors, mentees, and coaches.

The Coaching and Mentoring Certificate program will provide participants with a variety of diverse learning opportunities and hands-on experience as well as a field internship. Participants will learn about the principles of mentoring and coaching.

Certificate Program Objectives


Upon completing the Mentoring and Coaching Certificate program, participants will be able to:

  1. Apply mentoring techniques and strategies in various aspects of performance as it relates to their profession.

  2. Apply coaching techniques and strategies in various aspects of performance as it relates to their profession.

  3. Apply self-mentoring techniques and strategies in various aspects of performance as it relates to their profession.

  4. Formulate a code of conduct and ethics for mentoring and coaching practices.

  5. Plan and develop a mentoring, coaching, or self-mentoring program of implementation.

  6. Assess the effectiveness of mentoring, coaching, and self-mentoring programs.

Admission Requirements


The minimum admission standards for candidates for the Coaching and Mentoring Certificate program are one or more of the following:

  • A master’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university in this country, or its equivalent in a foreign institution, Or

  • Be currently enrolled in a master’s program, Or

  • Other circumstances acceptable to the chair or program coordinator.

To apply for admission to the Coaching and Mentoring Certificate program, the candidate must submit the following:

  1. An application for graduate admission. Students currently enrolled in a graduate program may elect to take some or all of the courses in the certificate program (all courses must be taken and passed with no less than a grade of C in all courses to receive the Certificate).

  2. Official transcripts of all prior university or college coursework.

  3. Professional resume and personal statement delineating professional background, future goals, and how obtaining the Certificate of Coaching and Mentoring helps in meeting stated goals.

  4. Application and supplemental documents must be submitted by the published deadline.

Certificate Requirements


The program requires a minimum of 18 credit hours. Students must complete:

  • EDL 517 - Foundations in Mentoring, Coaching, and Self-Mentoring   Credits: 3

  • EDL 518 - Ethics and the Law    Credits: 3

  • EDL 527 - Applications in Mentoring (Prerequisite to EDL 519)    Credits: 3

  • EDL 528 - Applications in Coaching (Prerequisite to EDL 519)    Credits: 3

  • EDL 529 - Applications in Self-Mentoring    Credits: 3

  • EDL 519 - Field Internship    Credits: 3
