The specialization in Curriculum Studies for Equity in Education is grounded in social justice, global education, critical pedagogy, and transformational praxis. The program focuses on theoretical and practical issues related to curriculum studies and educational practice. Graduates will be prepared to be effective school, district, and community level leaders in curriculum studies.

Admission Requirements
Candidates for admission to the M.Ed. with specialization in Curriculum Studies for Equity in Education must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a related field and are strongly encouraged to have three years of teaching experience (contact the Program Coordinator with questions about this requirement).
The following materials must be submitted in addition to the application for Graduate School:
- Official copies of transcripts from all institutions attended (graduate and undergraduate).
- Official scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Miller Analogies Test (MAT). Scores more than five years old at the time of application will not be considered.
- Candidates must hold or be qualified to hold a Class “A” teacher license in at least one area of education.
- Three years of teaching experience preferred.
- A statement of purpose delineating professional background, future goals, and how obtaining the degree helps in meeting stated goals.
- Three recommendations by individuals in professionally relevant roles.
- Bachelor’s degree earned from a regionally accredited institution, completed before graduate study begins.
- Application and supplemental documents must be submitted by the published deadline.
Degree Requirements (30 total credit hours)
Equity Institutes for Educational Leaders (6 credits required)
Curriculum Studies (12 credits required)
Research and Evaluation (6 credits required)
Culminating Project (6 credits required)
Exit Requirement
All students must complete a culminating project. All students must take and pass EDL 596 and EDL 597 . All students must defend the culminating project.
NC Licensure Requirement
To receive state licensure, candidates also must pass the licensure examination required by the state of North Carolina and submit the necessary paperwork to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. |
