SED 220  -  Understanding Disability in Society


This course provides an introductory exploration of the key concepts, theories, and frameworks that shape our understanding of disability and influence societal perceptions of accessibility. Through critical engagement with disability studies literature and research, students will evaluate diverse perspectives on disability-related issues and examine historical events, movements, and cultural narratives that have shaped societal attitudes and policies regarding disability in the United States. Students will also analyze the impact of media representations, societal attitudes, and cultural norms on the lived experiences of individuals with disabilities and assess how these factors contribute to systemic inequities. Through in class discussions and written assignments, students will apply insights gained from this course to propose strategies to address social issues and challenge prevailing assumptions about disability and propose ideas to create a more inclusive and equitable society.
