CMR 565 - Domestic Terrorism and Hate Crimes Course Description: This graduate course will explore the topic of Domestic Terrorism and Hate Crimes in the United States. There is considerable overlap between the political violence that we call Domestic Terrorism and Hate Crimes. These similarities will be explored by studying the history of Domestic Terrorism and Hate Crimes within the United States, analyzing research elucidating these related concepts, examining relevant case studies throughout American history, and discussing political, cultural, and community responses to these social problems. We will discuss the challenges our society faces regarding threats to the homeland, will assess the efficacy of past and present efforts to address these threats. Finally, we will discuss future directions for public policy. At the end of the course, students will be able to:
1. Understand the similarities and differences between domestic terrorism and hate crimes.
2. Demonstrate an understanding of past and current trends in terrorism and hate crimes in the United States.
3. Describe the impact that past and present threats have made on the government and our society.
4. Understand the impacts of public policy and culture on past threats, and assess the efficacy of future efforts.
