GLS 523 - Popular Culture Course Description: Cross-cultural and semiotic analysis of popular forms of everyday life (food, fashion, fads, entertainment trends, television, movies, music, myths, stereotypes, and icons of mass-mediated consumer culture), with a special emphasis upon thinking and writing critically about popular culture by examining tacit assumptions about how the world works and our place in it as well as the role language plays in shaping reality.
