Credit for Prior Learning

Credit for Prior Learning provides transfer credit in recognition of previously completed academic and non-academic college level learning.  There are several methods of receiving UNCW credit for academic work previously completed or for acquired but academically uncredited knowledge and experience. The categories of credit that may be granted include:

Transfer Credit from a 2-year or 4-year College or University

Students transferring to UNCW from another accredited college or university submit their transcripts to the Office of Admission as part of the application process. Credit will be awarded for all transferable courses earned at another institution for which a grade of C or better is earned and all official agreements will be followed (e.g. Comprehensive Articulation Agreement). Students may submit an appeal of their transferred credits through the Registrar’s Office. To graduate, students must meet the university’s Residency Requirement (see policy). Hours attempted, and grade points earned at other institutions are not used in calculating grade point averages. Transfer credit is used in evaluating eligibility for “Degrees with Distinction.” Colleges and Schools may have more restrictive limits based on the needs of the degree programs as published in the catalogue

Examination

Credit by examination is available at UNCW for undergraduate students in the following circumstances:

  1. Advanced Placement Exam: Students may receive credit by examination for achieving acceptable scores on a variety of Advanced Placement exams offered through the College Entrance Examination Board. A website listing of the examinations, required minimum scores, course equivalents, and credits awarded is available online at http://www.uncw.edu/reg/transfercredit-examAP.htm. Incoming students should have the score reports sent to the Office of Admissions for evaluation concerning placement and credit. Individual departments have determined the specific courses for which credit will be given.

  1. International Baccalaureate Exam: Students may receive credit by examination for achieving acceptable scores on the “High Level” International Baccalaureate (HL IB) examinations.  A student who earns the minimum required score or better on the International Baccalaureate examinations will receive appropriate college credit.  A website listing of the examinations, required minimum scores, course equivalents, and credits awarded is available online at http://www.uncw.edu/reg/transfercredit-examHLIB.htm. Incoming students should have the score reports sent to the Office of Admissions for evaluation concerning placement and credit.  Individual departments have determined the specific courses for which credit will be given.

  1. AP and IB Exam Credit Revocation: Students can revoke Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate credits earned in high school with approval from a Dean or designee of the student’s College unless a higher- level course for which it is a prerequisite has been successfully completed. Students who choose to revoke credit for a course may not subsequently receive credit by examination for that course. The decision to revoke credit is final and students must consult with their academic adviser before making the request.

  1. College Level Examination Program (CLEP): Students may receive credit for a variety of courses by achieving a passing score on one of the College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) tests. Students can register for the offered tests at University Testing Services, https://uncw.edu/testingservices/national/index.html. Students should have the score reports sent to the Registrars Office for evaluation concerning placement and credit.  Individual departments have determined the specific courses for which credit will be given.

  1. Cambridge International Examination: Students achieving acceptable scores on the Cambridge International Examination (CIE) and/or Cambridge Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE) Diploma may be eligible for credit. A website listing of the A and/or AS Level subject examinations, required grade, and credits awarded is available at https://uncw.edu/reg/transfercredit-examCIE.html. Examination grades should be sent to the Office of the Registrar. Individual departments continue to review and determine appropriate credit awarded for each subject.

  1. College Exemption: Students who have been exempted with credit from courses at an accredited college or university may be exempted with credit from appropriate courses at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. When the exemption is based on a test result, the student should have a copy of the score report sent to the Office of Admissions for evaluation concerning placement and credit

  1. Challenge Exams: In cases in which a student has demonstrated knowledge of a particular field by more advanced course work or experience, exemptions may be granted on an individual basis by the appropriate department chairperson. Such credit may involve satisfactory performance on a department-designed examination or project.

Military Education and Training

UNCW awards credit for courses taken while enlisted in the armed forces. An official military course transcript is required to conduct credit evaluation. A Joint Services Transcript, Community College of the Air Force, or in some cases education through the Department of Defense schools not recorded on other transcripts are accepted for credit.  Contact the Office of Admissions for further information (admissions@uncw.edu).

Certification or Licensure

Students who have received industry-recognized credentials or designations obtained through certification exams may be eligible to receive academic credit. Programs determine which certifications or professional training programs qualify for academic credit. An eligible certification is defined as an industry-recognized credential or designation that is obtained once a student has successfully passed a certification exam. Certification differs from licensure in that it validates specific industry-valued competencies rather than serving as a legal requirement for practicing a profession. The Office of the Registrar in conjunction with academic colleges is developing a list of industry certifications. Final determination of credit awards is made within the academic program, and it is the student’s responsibility to verify their eligibility and provide the necessary documentation for consideration. No more than 30 credit hours may be awarded through the portfolio assessment process and/or certifications or licensure credit and all limitations on transfer credit remain in place. See Residency Requirement and Requirements for Graduation

Industry or Corporate Experience

Students with previous Industry or Corporate work experience may be eligible for academic credit based on their work experience. Eligible experiences include non-collegiate instructional programs, such as, but not limited to, those for apprenticeships and workplace training that demonstrate competencies required relevant to degree or certificate completion. To qualify, students must successfully complete an approved portfolio development course, document the industry or corporate experience as part of the course, and submit the portfolio to the appropriate academic department for review. However, completing the course does not guarantee that academic credit will be awarded. Final determination of credit awards is made by the academic program. Students are responsible for confirming, in advance, whether their program grants credit for work experience before enrolling in an approved portfolio development course.

Portfolio Assessment

Students may earn credit for non-academic credentials and/or prior work experience through enrollment in an approved portfolio development course. This program, which requires the completion of a portfolio or portfolios, respects and honors learning that is gained through work, volunteering, or other life experiences or accomplishments. Course credit may be awarded to students who create portfolios to demonstrate they have learned similar materials through experience that other students learn in the classroom. Program directors, department chairs or their faculty designees review the portfolios to determine whether the student should receive credit.

All students seeking to earn Credit by Portfolio Assessment from UNCW must be enrolled UNCW students and must enroll in and successfully complete a UNCW Portfolio Development course.  Only portfolios, created by students enrolled in an approved UNCW Portfolio Development course and demonstrating experiences that match the learning outcomes of a UNCW course, can be evaluated by UNCW faculty for credit. Individual departments will set criteria for the consideration of any such credit and retain full discretion within established credit hour limits. No more than 30 credit hours may be awarded through the portfolio assessment process and/or certifications or licensure credit and all limitations on transfer credit remain in place. See Residency Requirement and Requirements for Graduation. Contact the Office of Admissions for further information (admissions@uncw.edu).
