The Department of English offers a 15-hour post-baccalaureate certificate in science and medical writing designed for graduate students and working professionals. The courses in this program will help advanced students to improve their ability to produce print and electronic genres, including research papers, grant applications, graphics, and social media, that will aid them to advance their work and move forward in their careers. The program can be completed online to allow working professionals and graduate students maximum flexibility.

Certificate Program Student Learning Outcomes


Upon completion of this certificate program, students will develop advanced proficiencies in the following:

  • Analyzing complex rhetorical situations [SMW1]
  • Selecting and composing appropriate print and electronic genres to advance projects in a range of organizational contexts [SMW2]
  • Using digital applications to compose and design effective texts [SMW3]
  • Crafting texts that communicate clearly and ethically to a range of global, crosscultural, and/or transdisciplinary audiences [SMW4]
  • Using primary and secondary research about the user experience (UX) to develop effective texts and designs [SMW5]

Admission Requirements


Applicants who seek admission to the post-baccalaureate certificate in science and medical writing must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in this country, or its equivalent in a foreign institution based on a four-year program, and have a strong overall academic record with a “B” average of better in the basic courses required in the area of the proposed certificate program.

To apply for admission to the post-baccalaurate certificate in science and medical writing, the candidate must submit the following:

  1. An application for admission to the graduate school.
  2. Official transcripts of all prior university or college coursework (undergraduate and graduate).
  3. A professional resume.
  4. A personal statement (500-600 words) describing reasons for pursuing the certificate.

Students who are enrolled in another graduate program at UNCW can simultaneously pursue this certificate program and receive support from financial aid towards tuition. Students who are not enrolled in another degree program at UNCW are not eligible for financial aid to support completion of the certificate.
