Degree Requirements for Middle Grades Education:
University Studies:
Students should follow university studies requirements of the University of North Carolina Wilmington as outlined in the Academic Programs section of the catalogue.
The major in middle grades education requires 88 hours (46 hours of education courses, 18 hours in an additional teaching field and 24 hours in an academic concentration) as follows: Two content methods courses from:
Academic Concentration:
An academic concentration of at least 24 semester hours is required. Academic concentrations may be chosen from one of the following four disciplines: Language Arts
Students are encouraged to select courses from University Studies to fulfill requirements in both the Academic Concentration and the Additional Teaching Field. Selected Courses (6 hours): Select one course each from two of the following groups*

Additional Teaching Field:
- 18 hours as specified with courses from all disciplines related to the field. Fields are language arts, mathematics, science, or social studies.
Note:
To qualify for the Bachelor of Arts in Middle Grades Education, 31 total semester hours must be taken in residence at UNCW. Admission to the Watson College of Education is required for enrollment in EDN/SED 300- and 400-level courses numbered higher than EDN 303 or SED 250 .
A grade of “C-” or better is required in all professional courses in the middle grades education program. Students may repeat courses in which they earned a grade of lower than “C-” only with the permission of the dean of the Watson College of Education. A cumulative grade point average of 2.70 is required for eligibility for the practicum semester. |
