The Department of International Studies offers an innovative interdisciplinary program of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree in International Studies. Specific goals of the undergraduate program include: (1) foundational and specific knowledge of global issues, processes, trends, and policies; (2) the skills and confidence necessary to make critical, informed evaluations and judgments about global issues, processes, trends, and policies; (3) proficency in a language in addition to English; (4) the intellectual and ethical responsibilities of active global citizenship; and (5) the ability to use diverse cultural frames of reference to accept cultural differences and tolerate cultural ambiguity. The program includes rich opportunities for students to engage in study abroad and explore areas of particular interest such as globalization and the environment, of global cultures including the world’s art, literatures, languages, and religions, and of specific regions including Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Latin America. Fundamental to UNCW’s International Studies program is its mission to prepare its students to meet the many complex challenges facing our world, and gain a competitive edge in the global workforce by increasing relevant experiences and marketability for continuing education and careers in a global economy.
