SEC 305-iSTEM - Diverse Learners in Secondary Education Corequisite: SEC 325-iSTEM . The course examines different theoretical perspectives on learning, cognition, and cognitive development. It also explores issues of diversity in the secondary schools’ classroom. It sensitizes the pre-service teachers with necessary knowledge, skills, and disposition related to teaching diversity that fosters excellence in a culturally responsive environment. The course offers one module on learning and cognition and four modules on specific diverse populations: (1) multicultural groups regarding race, gender, and ethnicity, (2) English language learniners, (3) special needs learners in the mainstream classroom, and (4) students idenified as gifted. The last module is focused on reflection on observation of skilled teachers demonstrating appropriate instructional techniques.
