PLS 533 - Nonprofits, Society and Public Policy

Course Description: This course explores the roles that nonprofit organizations play in the U.S. and the public policy issues confronting nonprofit organizations.  Drawing upon historical, political, economic and sociological perspectives this course provides an overview of the development of the nonprofit sector and the unique roles that the sector plays in American society. We will also explore contemporary public policy developments that directly relate to nonprofit organizations, such as the continued privatization of public services; charitable choice legislation at the state and national level; the role of foundations in shaping public policy; nonprofit lobbying and activism; and questions of civic participation and civil society.  UNCW’s location in a small city in a largely rural, but rapidly growing region, provides a unique laboratory to undertake a unique research project that explores the role of the sector in our region and public policy issues confronting our rapidly developing sector.
