Musical Theatre Minor

The interdisciplinary minor in Musical Theatre is offered to students in all majors seeking to enhance their degree with an added focus in the discipline of musical theatre. All students take core coursework in applied voice, dance and movement, scene study and production workshops, and musical theatre history and literature; non-theatre majors take foundational acting courses and non-music majors take foundational courses in musicianship and class voice. For additional information, students should contact Dr. Nancy King (chair, Department of Music) and Dr. Helena Kopchick Spencer (undergraduate program coordinator, Department of Music).

Requirements for a Minor in Musical Theatre


Musicianship (2 Credit Hours)


Music majors take MUS 111. Non-music majors take MUS 145 unless they demonstrate music literacy on the theory placement exam administered by the Department of Music. 

Applied Voice Lessons (4 Credit Hours)


Placement in MUS 195 or MUS 196 determined by audition for the Department of Music voice faculty. Music majors take MUS 196; all other students take MUS 195.

Musical Theatre Performance (3 Credit Hours)


Required for all students:

History and Literature (3 Credit Hours)


Dance (6 Credit Hours)


Required for all students:

Acting (3 Credit Hours)


Theatre majors in the performance option take THR 231; all other students take THR 230.

Total Credit Hours: 24
