The Department of World Languages and Cultuers offers a major in Spanish. While acquiring advanced-level language proficiency in the language, students will become knowledgeable about language, linguistics, cultures, history, and artistic production of the Spanish-speaking world. The following combination of skills are acquired through campus study, applied learning, study abroad, internships, and service learning: language proficiency; intercultural competence; critical thinking; creative problem-solving, and adaptability. Spanish graduates can successfully navigate the world and are well-prepared for a variety of professions in fields including business, government and politics, engineering, law, education, healthcare, scientific research and development, social work, and tourism, among others. Applied Learning Requirement


To satisfy the applied-learning requirement for foreign language, a student must complete 3 credit hours of study abroad (at the intermediate level or above) or 3 credit hours of internship, directed individual study, practicum, honors, or service learning.

Oral Communication Requirement


To satisfy the oral communication requirement for the B.A. degree in Spanish a student must successfully complete SPN 303 .

Requirements for a Major in Spanish for the B.A. Degree


36 hours (Twelve (12) must be SPN 303 , SPN 305 , SPN 306  and SPN 307 ; at least six (6) must be at the 400 level, and up to six (6) may be at the 200 level.) Only 3 hours at the 400 level may be obtained by means of SPN 490 , SPN 491 , SPN 498 , or SPN 499 .

Total Credit Hours: 36


Additional Information


A grade of “C-” or better is required in each course counted toward the major and a “C” (2.00) average or better for all courses counted toward the major.
