Our degree is designed to help students pursue their passion for teaching music in a public or private school setting. Students will study instrumental, vocal and general music pedagogy for kindergarten through 12th grade, while gaining background in music theory, history, conducting and performance. Applied learning experience prepares students for a teaching career and qualifies them for the North Carolina Class A teaching license. Students learn best teaching practices, engage with PK-12 cooperating music educators, engage with outreach projects with community orgraniations, and desmonstrate leadership to the community, the classroom and professional organizations.

Oral Communication Requirement
To satisfy the oral communication requirement for the B.A. in Music and the B.M. in Music Education a student must successfully complete MUS 285 or MUS 496 . Computer Requirement
To satisfy the computer requirement for the B.A. degree in Music and the B.M. in Music Education a student must successfully complete MUS 110 . Applied Learning Requirement
To satisfy the applied learning requirement for the B.A. degree in Music and the B.M. degree in Music Education a student must successfully complete either EDN 409 or MUS 493 or MUS 496 . Core Requirements Common to all Music Curricula (22 Credit Hours)
Core Music Ensemble
Music Education majors are required to be in at least one large music ensemble appropriate to the student’s concentration (MUS 180 , MUS 183 , MUS 184 , MUS 185 , MUS 186 , MUS 187 ) during each semester they are in residence, excepting the student teaching semester (7 hours). Keyboard and guitar students may substitute up to 4 hours from MUS 130 , MUS 182 . Only one large ensemble per semester may be credited toward the degree. In addition, no credit toward music major requirements will be granted for MUS 105, MUS 106 and/or MUS 115. Bachelor of Music in Music Education
- Music Core Requirements: 28 hours (see above).
- Performance Core: 8 hours.
- Concentration: 18-21 hours in music.
- Watson College of Education: 19 hours.
- FNA 101 and PSY 105 as University Studies electives.
- MUS 284 Foundations of Music Education
Performance Core (7 Credit Hours)
- 7 hours (7 semesters) of applied music in the major applied instrument (MUS 196 , MUS 396 ) with not less than 3 hours (3 semesters) at the 300 level.

Additional Information
All music majors must pass the piano proficiency examination and the listening repertory examinations, as described in the latest edition of the Department of Music Student Handbook. All students are expected to make regular progress toward completion of those requirements. Students are required to enroll in, and successfully complete MUS 242 (1 credit hour) in order to pass the piano proficiency (piano majors may substitute a secondary applied in lieu of MUS 242 .) |
