French, B.A.


Program Coordinator: Greta Bliss, Ph.D. 

The College of Humanities, Social Sciences, and the Arts offers a major in French and Francophone Studies. While acquiring advanced-level proficiency in the French language, students will become knowledgeable about the cultures, history, and artistic production of the French-speaking world. The following combination of skills are acquired through on-campus study and recommended study abroad: language proficiency; intercultural competence; critical thinking; creative problem-solving, and adaptability. French B.A. graduates can successfully navigate the world and are well-prepared for a variety of professions in fields including film, business, government and politics, engineering, law, education, tourism, healthcare, and scientific research and development. For additional information, including guidance on planning a double major, please contact the French program coordinator in the Department of World Languages & Cultures, Dr. Greta Bliss.

Oral Communication Requirement


To satisfy the oral communication requirement for the B.A. degree in French a student must successfully complete FRH 301 .

Applied Learning Requirement


To satisfy the applied-learning requirement for foreign language, a student must complete 6 credit hours of study abroad (at the intermediate level or above) or 3 credit hours of internship, directed individual study, practicum, honors, or service learning.

Requirements for a Major in French for the B.A. Degree


Including FRH 201 -FRH 202  or the equivalent and thirty hours at the 300-400 level of which at least 6 hours must be at the 400 level. FRH 294 , FRH 394 , and FRH 494  may be repeated under different subtitles. Only 3 of the hours at the 400 level may be obtained by means of a FRH 491  or FRH 498 .

Additional Information


A grade of “C-” or better is required in each course counted toward the major and a grade point average of 2.000 or better for all courses counted towards the major. Also required is a passing score on the departmental French oral proficiency exam.
