This program is designed to provide coursework in Middle Grades Education for non-certified teachers who have been hired to teach in middle grades. This coursework is designed to lead to NC teacher certification and licensure. This is not a degree program. Applicants seeking a master’s degree should apply to the Middle Grades MAT program.
Target Audience: Non-certified teachers (Clinical Residents) who have been hired to teach in middle grades.

Admission Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree completed before graduate study begins.
- Three recommendations from individuals who can attest to the qualifications of the applicant for admission to this program.
- One transcript is required from each U.S. post-secondary institution attended.
- Statement of Interest Essay should describe reasons for pursuing this certificate.
Certificate Objectives
Upon completion of the graduate certificate in Middle Grades Education, the candidate should be able to: - Demonstrate teacher leadership in their classrooms and schools by applying concepts, principles, and standards related to young adolescent development and developmentally responsive middle schools
- Establish a respectful educational environment for diverse learners by adapting instruction based on analysis of the individual needs of young adolescents and their community contexts
- Demonstrate content knowledge by applying major content-specific concepts, principles, and standards in their classrooms
- Facilitate student learning by applying a variety of developmentally appropriate strategies to meet the needs of young adolescents
- Reflect on their teaching practice by analyzing student learning to make informed instructional decisions
