Clinical Residency in the Secondary Schools, Post-Baccalaureate Certificate

This program is designed to provide coursework in the field of Teaching Secondary Education for non-certified teachers who have been hired to teach in high schools. This coursework is designed to lead to NC teacher certification. This is not a degree program. Applicants seeking a master’s degree should apply for the secondary education specialization, M.A.T. degree. Upon successful completion, the 18-hour graduate certificate hours will be honored in the 33-hour secondary MAT program.

Admission Requirements


  1. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university must be completed before graduate study begins.
  2. Transcripts of all college, university or community college work (undergraduate and graduate). Undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or better is recommended for application to UNCW. The state of North Carolina Department of Public Instruction requires that applicants have an undergraduate GPA of 2.7 to receive a teaching license.
  3. Three letters of recommendation.

Program Objectives


Candidates in the Secondary Education Residency program will develop knowledge and skills commensurate with that of a first year high school teacher. This body of knowledge includes the following.

  • Demonstrate effective instructional practices including working with the developmental and learning needs of individuals, including adolescents with special needs and ESL/ELL populations.
  • Establish a classroom climate conducive to the learning, social and emotional needs of adolescents.
  • Choose objectives consistent with state and local curriculum guidelines, the learning needs of students, and guidelines established by learned societies.
  • Demonstrate effective teaching using appropriate assessments and evaluative procedures, positive impact on student learning, self-reflection, and appropriate professional dispositions.

Exit Requirements


  1. Completion of the state-required EdTPA Portfolio
  2. Required to earn a grade of A or B in SEC 508-Residency in the Secondary Schools Internship
