This program is designed to provide coursework in the field of Teaching English as a Second Language for individuals seeking recommendation for NC K12 licensure in Teaching English as a Second Language.This program meets the North Carolina requirements for teachers hired on a Residency Licensure.

Admission Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university completed before graduate study begins.
- Transcripts of all college, university or community college work (undergraduate and graduate). Undergraduate GPA of 3. 0 or better is recommended for application to UNCW. The state of North Carolina Department of Public Instruction requires that applicants have an undergraduate GPA of 2.7 to receive a teaching license.
- Three letters of recommendation.
- Praxis II ESOL score. Applicants must attempt the Praxis II ESOL as part of their application. Applicants who do not pass the test but are still admitted will be required to pass the Praxis II ESOL prior to their internship.
Program Objectives
Candidates in the TESL Clinical Residency program will develop knowledge and skills commensurate with that of a first year ESL teacher. This body of knowledge includes the following. - Knowledge of K‐12 communities and issues affecting the English language learner population.
- Effective communication skills that can be utilized when interacting with colleagues, administrators, and families
- Effective ability to design, implement, and assess effective instruction.
- Establish a classroom environment sensitive to the cultural and linguistic needs of all students.
- Demonstrate knowledge of state and federal policies and regulations with regard to the ESL population.
- Use technology to enhance the academic achievement of English language learners.
- Demonstrate effective leadership within the school environment.
Exit Requirements
PROPOSED EXIT REQUIREMENTS: 1. Completion of the state-required EdTPA Portfolio 2. Completion of the Praxis II ESOL 3. Required to earn a grade of A or B in EDN 590 -Student Teaching in Education |
