Music Education, Post-Baccalaureate Certificate

The Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Music Education is designed to enhance the teaching competencies of professional music teachers who seek to effectively develop, implement, and evaluate music education curricula in K-12 settings. Grounded in the latest educational research of best practices of music teaching, the program provides in-service music teachers with the opportunity to obtain the skills and knowledge to create engaging and effective environments for teaching and learning music.

The Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Music Education program will provide participants with a variety of focused learning opportunities and hands-on experiences. Participants will learn about the principles of active music-making and best practices for K-12 applications including curriculum design and assessment strategies. This program is designed to be research-based with practical applications for in-service music teachers.

 

Admission Requirements


To be considered for admission, candidates must possess an undergraduate degree in music education or a closely related field or documented successful professional music teaching experience. The program coordinator determines eligibility, consulting as needed with program faculty.

Candidates must submit the following:

1. An application for admission to the graduate school;
2. Official transcripts of all prior university or college coursework (undergraduate and graduate);
3.  A professional resume.
5. Application and supplemental documents must be submitted by the published deadline.

Pedagogical Core


The three levels courses comprise the Pedagogical core of the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Music Education, with an emphasis on Orff-Schulwerk. Undergraduate students may substitute MUS 401 for MUS 501.

Applied Learning Core


The three levels of field experience courses comprise the Applied Learning core of the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Music Education, with an emphasis on Orff-Schulwerk.

Curricular Capstone


These two courses are options for a capstone course, with a focus on curriculum development in Orff-Schulwerk. After completion of the Pedagogical and Applied Learning Core courses, students choose one to satisfy the certification requirements.
