Africana Studies Minor

The UNCW Africana Studies minor is an interdisciplinary field of study designed to foster and encourage critical and systematic inquiry into the historical, cultural, social, and political factors and forces that shape African, African American, Caribbean, and other peoples of African descent around the world. By centering knowledge of Africana Studies, the curriculum seeks to provide students with a nexus to today’s world; bringing knowledge and awareness to the diversity of its African peoples and to cultivate a sense of global community.

Requirements for a Minor in Africana Studies:

To earn a minor in Africana Studies requires 21 hours, including six (6) hours in core courses; one course from each of the three groups, A, B, and C for a total of nine (9) hours; and six 6) hours from any of the groups including the electives. At least (6) of the 21 hours must be at the 300-level or higher.

Additional Information:

Students must earn at least a “C” (2.00) average in courses counted for a minor in Africana studies. Courses taken to fulfill major requirements cannot be used to fulfill requirements for the Africana studies minor.
