HON 399 - A Preparation for the Honors Thesis


This course is designed as a workshop to help students prepare for the thesis experience in their senior year and develop a full-fledged proposal of their research project. Honors students in their junior year often ask themselves how to start a thesis, how to find a good topic of inquiry that suits them and their career goals, how to define a research question, how to find an advisor, and what resources exist on campus to help them execute their project. The goal of this course is to “demystify” the thesis process, reassure students of its manageable scope, and help them understand the value of undergraduate research. The honors thesis places students in the role of a scholar leading an initiative. It offers them the opportunity to tap into their own curiosity, do original research on a topic of their choosing, formulate a question, design a plan to address that question, communicate what they learned to other scholars and peers, and write an outstanding thesis that best displays their skills in investigation, critical thinking, and communication.

Credit Hours: 1

Additional Restrictions/Requirements: Junior standing or consent of instructor.
Course Repeatability: Course may not be repeated.
