GLY 443 - Tectonics Credit Hours: 3 (GLY 543 ) Prerequisites: GLY 201 , GLY 310 , GLY 441 or permission of instructor. Explores ideas on plate tectonic theory including assessment of data that lead to its acceptance. Examines a broad range of tectonic principles and dynamics using modern and ancient examples, and considers controls on geological and geophysical processes from Earth’s core to crust. Includes geometry of present and past plate boundaries and motions, development of plates including sea-floor spreading, subduction, and orogeny, evolution of continents and ocean basins, and tectonic driving mechanisms. Three lecture hours each week.
