Prerequisite: PLS 212 or consent of instructor. Critical examination of political ideas from 1500 to 1900 with special attention to those of Machiavelli, Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, Montesquieu, Hume, Burke, Hegel, Bentham, Marx, the Mills, Spencer, T.H. Green and Nietzsche.
