    Course Description: This course examines theoretical underpinnings and financial management concepts that pertain to costs, cost analysis, budgeting, variance analysis, staffing, productivity, and forecasting to prepare nurse leaders for decision- making in complex health care organizations. Examines economic perspectives addressing health financing and policy questions, including: incentives and tradeoffs in healthcare decisions; healthcare production and provision; health insurance markets; and the role of government.

  • NSG 680 - Population Health Promotion and Clinical Epidemiology


    Course Description: This course provides the student with a theoretical foundation for wellness, health promotion, disease prevention, and behavioral modification for individuals, aggregates and populations. The environmental, socioeconomic, epidemiological, and cultural context of health behaviors will be explored. The emphasis is on theories and research to promote and preserve wellness lifestyles in patient populations, disease risk appraisal and reduction strategies. This course will also focus on understanding the impact of social determinants on health outcomes. Students will assess population health models, frameworks, and practice guidelines to address health status of populations and sources of health inequalities. An emphasis is placed on collaborative interprofessional strategies to promote health, reduce risk factors, improve health outcomes, and improve quality of care in health care systems. Students will integrate concepts of population-based health outcomes management into their final DNP Project.

    Course Description: The focus of this introductory course is on the fundamentals of genetics and genomics and its application to advanced nursing practice. Complex diseases, cancer, and risk assessment are just some of the areas that this course will explore. There will be a strong focus on pharmacogenetics and pharmacogenomics within this course. This course will also examine the impact of genomics on technology, ethics, and the health care environment.

  • NSG 686 - Methodologic Approaches to Evidence-Based Practice


    Course Description: This course focuses on the skills necessary to translate the best available evidence into practice within health care organizations. Conceptualization, definition, theoretical rationale, and models of evidence-based practice are evaluated. Students identify a high priority health problem in their area of clinical expertise and synthesize the literature supporting the need for a practice change initiative. Identification of targeted health improvement outcomes in a patient population guides the student in developing goals for the DNP Project. Topics include: a review of the research process, research critique, rating and synthesizing the strength of evidence, decision making for practice, translation opportunities (outcomes, evaluation research, quality improvement, cost-effectiveness analysis), risk adjustment, and applied statistical analysis.

    Course Description: This course builds on a foundation of knowledge about evidence-based practice for the advanced practice registered nurse. The need for a practice change initiative will be assessed in an actual clinical environment. Translation models, theories of change, financial, ethical, and social implications are considered in translating evidence into practice. Evaluation strategies, methods of measurement, and analysis are applied to assess proposed improvements in practice and clinical care outcomes.     Course Description: This course provides the opportunity for students to demonstrate achievement of DNP competencies via a practice immersion in which they implement the DNP project to improve patient outcomes in the practice setting.     Course Description: This course addresses the broad concepts of health policy and population health and their application to the leadership role of the doctorate of nursing practice (DNP). The impact of social determinants of health and health policy on population health outcomes and health disparities will be examined using nursing, public health and relevant theories. Essential content includes 1) critical analysis of health policy, public health systems, and population health data; 2) development of strategies for implementing health policy and population health into advanced nursing practice role; 3) identification of the impact of social determinants of health on relevant population health outcomes; and 4) development of leadership skills to influence population health and health policy, with a focus on reducing disparities and improving health outcomes.

    Course Description: Exploration in depth of some of the more advanced topics in the experimental analysis of behavior on students’ knowledge of basic principles, the research methodology, and the conceptual foundations of behavior analysis. In the seminar course, the focus is on the primary empirical literature and on the accompanying theoretical issues.
