On-Campus Living

The university currently maintains residence facilities for over 3,700 students in eight modern, conveniently located residence halls, seventeen apartment buildings, and seven suite-style buildings.

New incoming freshmen will be required to maintain residency on campus for their first year, unless an application for exemption is approved. An approved exemption includes maintaining a primary residence with their parents or legal guardian within Brunswick County, New Hanover County or Pender County areas. Students who reside in the following areas – Belk, Galloway, Graham, Hewlett, Schwartz, Cornerstone, Keystone, Innovation House, and University Suites – are required to purchase a meal plan. Seahawk Village, Seahawk Landing, and Seahawk Crossing residents are not required to opt-in to a university meal plan but are strongly encouraged to participate in that program which will allow easy access to the many food options on campus.

All On-Campus Housing Meal Plans feature Teal Meals that can be used for a specified combo meal of your choice at the following Campus Dining locations: Port City Java, Dunkin Donuts, The Landing, Einstein’s Bros Bagels, Hawk’s Nest Food Court, Chick-fil-A, Subway and MOOYAH. Each meal plan also features Food Dollars that can be used at any campus dining location, as well as vending machines and at the Barnes and Noble Starbucks Café. The plan also comes with All Access Meals that provide unlimited entry into Wagoner Hall or Dub’s Cafe. During winter and spring break, residential facilities are closed with the exception of Seahawk Village, Seahawk Landing, Seahawk Crossing, and the University Suites (O-U).

On-Campus Required Housing - Meal Plans

A meal plan is required for all undergraduate and graduate students who plan to live in on-campus required housing, which includes Belk, Galloway, Graham, Hewlett, Schwartz, Cornerstone, Honors, Innovation House, University Apartments, or University Suites. Students living in any of these facilities need to select one of two required on-campus housing meal plan options.

Meal plan transactions are facilitated on students’ UNCW One Card and it must be presented at every meal. Student ID cards are not transferable. Both plans allow students to treat a friend or family member by using a guest meal at Wagoner Dining Hall and Dub’s Café, or by using their food dollars or Teal Meals. Teal Meals do NOT carry over from one week to the next, and will reset every Sunday morning.

Meal Plan Rolling: The student’s Fall semester meal plan will be automatically assigned to the student for the Spring semester. Changes to meal plans can be made in mySeaport before the change period end date. For a list of current change period dates, please visit the UNCW One Card student meal plan website at http://uncw.edu/studentmealplans/procedures.html#changes.

Unused Food Dollars are permitted to roll if you purchase a meal plan for the following semester. Rolling is permitted from summer to fall and fall to spring ONLY. All Food Dollars expire at the end of the spring semester.

Summer School

Summer school tuition, fees, refund policy, and room and board rates will be listed on the summer school Web page www.uncw.edu/summer.

UNCW Refund Policy – Fall and Spring

The university’s refund policy complies with the requirements of the university’s accrediting agency and the U.S. Department of Education. This refund policy only applies to complete withdrawals from UNCW. Students who simply withdraw from an individual class after the drop/add period receive NO refund or reduction of fees.

Students must follow the official withdrawal process to receive a refund under the university’s policy. To officially withdraw from the university, students must submit an Official Withdrawal Form to the Graduate School. Any outstanding financial obligations to the university will be deducted from the amount refunded.

A student who officially withdraws from the university on or before the last day of registration (drop/add) period will receive a refund of the amount paid. Refunds are based on the date contained on the Official Withdrawal Form.

Students completely withdrawing after the drop/add period will receive refunds as follows:

Date of Complete Withdrawal (Schedule on Student Accounts website) Refund Percentage
On or before drop/add 100%
After add/drop but prior to first 10% of the enrollment period 90%
Between the first 10% and the end of the first 25% of the enrollment period 50%
Between the first 25% and the end of the first 50% of the enrollment period 25%
After the end of the first 50% of the enrollment period 0%

Declining balance portions of board plans will be refunded separately. The refund policy applies to complete withdrawals from UNCW.

Note: Before officially withdrawing, a student should understand financial implications.

UNCW Refund Policy – Summer School

Because of the short duration of summer school sessions, summer school charges are not refundable after the drop/add period.

Residence Status for Tuition Purposes

In compliance with state law, the University of North Carolina system now requires students to request a residency classification from the new Residency Determination Service (RDS). RDS is the entity responsible for all new classifications of residency in North Carolina.

The specific requirements for establishing residency for tuition purposes and for eligibility for State financial aid are prescribed by state law.  A North Carolina resident for tuition purposes (and for State financial aid consideration) is a person, or a dependent person (dependent according to IRS tax code – not the FAFSA definition of dependency), whose parent or legal guardian has established and maintained legal residence in North Carolina for at least 12 months.

Residence in North Carolina must be legitimate and be a permanent situation rather than just for the purpose of maintaining a residence prior to enrollment at an institution of higher education.

To learn more about residency and/or complete a determination go to www.NCresidency.org.

Under North Carolina law, to qualify for in-state residency, you must show that you:

  • Have established your legal residence (domicile) in North Carolina, and
  • Have maintained that domicile for at least twelve (12) consecutive months before the beginning of the term, and
  • Have a residentiary presence in the state, and
  • Intend to make North Carolina your permanent home indefinitely (rather than being in North Carolina solely to attend college).

Persons not meeting the 12-month legal residence requirement may be classified as North Carolina residents for tuition purposes only if they fall within one of the limited “exception” categories authorized by the North Carolina Legislature. All others are ineligible for classification as a North Carolina “resident for tuition purposes” and will be charged out-of-state tuition and not be given consideration for State financial aid. To learn more about residency and complete a determination go to www.NCresidency.org.

In order for your residency determination to affect the tuition rate for your current term at UNCW, your RDS Reconsideration request must be complete (all data and documentation turned in) and your request submitted with an RDS effective date on, or before, the 30th day of the term of the current semester, starting with the first day of classes for the semester. Reconsideration requests completed and submitted with an RDS effective date after the 30th day of the term affect the tuition rate for subsequent terms, not the current term. Please refer to this calendar of events to determine the “classes begin” day for the semester under reconsideration: https://www.uncw.edu/reg/calendars-events.html.
